The world around us, the places we live, we travel, where we work and conduct all our activities are products of the work of people, engineers, architects, urbanists and planners, who have the task, often very difficult and full responsibility, to create places where a community will have to live. It seems obvious to think of a city as an artificial product, but also the countryside, hilly and mountain areas, coastal areas and valleys, in short all the suburban areas are the result of the arrangement, control, and often human activity; especially now that we no longer talk about urban design but land-use planning, the result also of contemporary sensibility to the environment and territory, with a view to sustainable development.
In the Western world, but now increasingly also in developing countries, leading to an overall control on the territory that is and always will be a key to wealth status. In the hands of engineers, architects and planners, so there is a huge responsibility. That is why today, more than a time when the reduced technical and design prevented a global vision of territorial development, the issue of quality has become essential.
The quality is now widely used in production, as defined by the International Organization for Standardization that with the ISO 9000 standards and has introduced the tools with which to define and certify companies and product quality. The basic concepts are linked to the ability to meet certain requirements by the end user that is targeted for a particular product. In essence you have defined manufacturing procedures by which companies that can apply to have a total control over their product, so adaptable to different performance requirements by the end user. In other words, if in a few years people will want cars with certain requirements, ISO 9000 certified company may, by intervening in the production process, produce cars that meet customer demands and, being certified companies, they are guaranteed to be quality products for reliable and able to meet certain requirements standard.

All this discussion on quality has become almost a must for companies, even as consumers increasingly demand quality products, products that provide security, which are constantly evolving to meet and meet increasing requirements. So you try to produce cars more secure and less polluting, healthier foods, faster computers and high-performance, in short the best products. All this is inherent in the concept of progress that humanity has always driven to improve themselves and better the world in which they live.
But what has this to do with urban planning or architecture?
The building process (planning, design and implementation) is an industrial process that can, indeed must, be treated in accordance with the philosophy of quality. In this way the final product, tested and maintained throughout the process made with method and precision as quality standards require, it will be a quality product, satisfy the needs and requirements from users (and particularly the principal) and will be constantly improved through continuous updating of the process to respond more comprehensively to the new requirements. In the specific case planning so you can analyze, process, test and resolve problems that will require environmental and social change through new and more effective planning strategies.
That sounds easy and almost automatic thing, but in fact the planning process is much more complex and articulated a standard industrial process because it depends on factors and variables related to psychology and sociology, two subjects that have no clear boundaries and which are constantly evolving. To create an urban environment then we must also explore these areas a place that bind to the perception that citizens have of their city and their neighborhood.
Difficile a dirsi, anche perché una sensibilità consapevole di questo concetto si ha solo nella seconda parte del '900, quando si vengono a create conditions of life in which most people (in the developed world) may be regarded as raised by the most pressing needs (survival and material support) and there is the problem of an overall improvement in well-being. Health (and with it the prevention of disease before treatment), the economic condition (and the conditions for sustainable development), the employment opportunities (employment levels and quality of jobs), the quality of (Protection and Control of local natural heritage), education and the possibilities connected with it, social security (the level of crime and the capacity of government to prevent and curb), the social balance and, last but not least, the quality of products (especially food) that you can access are just some of the many factors that are considered to examine charts and reports on the quality of life of our city. The weight given to these factors can vary but overall the results are consistent with a new awareness of the people who requires a continuous improvement of the general welfare, represented by the aspects listed above.
urban planning that has weight in all this? Huge!
The development of a territory, defined as planning for the possibility of setting up new businesses production and trade and improve existing ones, air quality and green, closely related to a policy of conservation and environmental improvement, the study of road networks and efficient urban transport, which relates also to a policy of killing ' air pollution and traffic problems that have great social cost, creating places of social gathering and recreation, useful to develop a sensitivity and a local identity that reduce social imbalances and the resulting crime, and a careful and studied strategy sustainable development (which links the social, economic and environmental considerations so as not to jeopardize the future development of a community) are the most important aspects of the planner's work in accordance with the government can and must work to ensure these goals aimed at improving the quality of life so important to people.
A very important and too often overlooked.
